They include a new purple iPhone, colored iMacs and the new AirTag (more about that in a minute) I will admit to being an Apple fanboy- to an extent. Yes. I did stand in line for the opening of the Apple Store at the Grove (what I won't do for a free t-shirt!) but no, I didn't camp overnight so I could be the first person in. Well, as "normal" as we can get: schools are starting to re-open. you can dine in (in limited numbers), go to the movies (in limited numbers, both because of restrictions and because a couple of movie chains gave up the ghost), and the traffic and the air quality is almost back to the dismal pre-covid days. tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-11230947324848990632020-04-20T15:33:00.001-07:002020-04-20T15:50:52.946-07:00I'm back: a "safe-at-home" Rant
The picture is from the Milwaukee Independent of a protester in Brookfield, Wisconsin who was moved to risk the health of herself and others because that tiresome stay-at-home order is keeping her from getting a nice feathered trim and some kicky highlights. Never mind that deaths from Covid-19 today are up over 36000 (230 in Wisconsin.) Dear Mr Cook:
I know that the chances of your reading this, much less responding are about the same as me winning next year's Academy Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical, but I still have to write..
There seems to be a growing shift away from Apple being the company that is seamless to one that has more seams than all Frankenstein's creations combined. Tomorrow is Father's Day. I want to remember my father, who was a Captain and Master Mariner in the Merchant Marine.
My Father was apparently known as one of those "wild" Pease boys in my hometown in Massachusetts. Of course in those days I suppose that being "wild" could mean parting your hair a half inch to the left or wearing a red tie on Thursday.
I do know that he saw my mother (who was tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-91379532047652653312014-06-01T21:23:00.001-07:002014-06-01T21:36:17.407-07:00Star SightingsHaving worked retail in both New York and Beverly Hills (well, years ago) I've had quite a few run ins with people who were stars, or thought they were. I'm not going to go through the boring "this person was an a$$hole" ones since that doesn't float my boat, but there are a few of them that I remember since they were such a delight.

I was watching "Visiting... With Huell Howser" (and missing him) when he visited a place in downtown LA that processed meat. Huell freaked out when confronted with a bin full of cow tongues awaiting blanching.
I could kind of relate.
I can still remember the first time I ate tongue. I was hanging out with my bestie Moo and her mother invited me to stay to dinner for the first time. Today I went to IKEA to buy some furniture. Of course this ended up being a process, ordering a pickup from ZipCar, remembering where the hell Burbank is, trying to resolve my shopping lists against massive piles of stuff called "Flövig" or "Hœkenføn" or "Plęnf." By now at 8PM I have assembled most if not all of my furnishings and am sitting back with some Trader Joes's tamales and a glass of tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-58530408784007635192013-11-06T20:13:00.000-08:002013-11-06T20:39:54.913-08:00A Tale of a Sofa
Or, no good deed goes unpunished..
One of my neighbors asked a favor. They know I work from home and asked that I let into their apartment delivery people with a new sofa for them. Basically being unable to come up with an excuse why I couldn't do so, I said yes. I asked them to let the delivery people have my number so I know when they get here and they let me know the timeframe.
So the tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-84377599696023339382013-09-11T12:53:00.002-07:002013-09-11T12:53:48.294-07:00Remembering
I'll always remember them this way- before Battery Park City, before the area became a hub of activity with apartments and shops. Two cool, somewhat detached towers that were an ode to American Progress and capitalism.
I wrote on the five-year anniversary: "They were not beloved when they were built, indeed they were seen as dinosaurs: the last gasp of urban-planning gone bad. From 8 years ago, my memories of Katrina.
If I only had a heart........Many of you know that I don't have the closest relationship with my siblings. I have one sister who stayed back in Massachusetts, who seems perfectly keen on never speaking to either my brother or me again. I figure that whatever reason she has for this is her reason, and I don't press- if there's some wrong that I did, tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-45619918531186661132013-08-08T17:46:00.002-07:002013-08-08T17:46:54.005-07:00Minor Luck
I am, I suppose a lucky person. I have reasonable health, I have lovely friends and I live in a place with a wonderful village feel. I know "minorly" isn't a word, but I would consider myself "minorly lucky." Today I had two instances. I went to the car wash which has a two-dollar weekly special. I noticed something stuck in the coin return in the bay I parked in and when I used my nail to prytmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-54343018996706915182013-06-27T08:47:00.000-07:002013-06-27T08:47:03.649-07:00Freedom
Today, Wednesday I awoke to a State where one of my rights which had been taken away by a popular vote was reinstated. It's not a right that I was in any danger of exercising. It was not my right to vote, my rights concerning age discrimination or my rights concerning the fact that I cannot be fired in California simply for being gay although in 29 other states I can be. tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-48659230719903397262013-06-03T21:26:00.001-07:002013-06-03T21:26:26.711-07:00How To Do It, and How Not To Do It.Back in the day when GM was struggling, one of the true believers cut some footage into a short film that I believe was shown at a in-house gathering. It was so good it made it to the internets and I believe to broadcast. It was perfect- it showed in a brief, snappy way what the company had achieved and where they were going:

A recent post on FaceBook reminded me of something from my yoof: family drives with the dog. In this case it was the seventies and summer drives in our "beach" wagon (as it was referred to) with our family dog Jackie. Dad would drive us to various destinations of scenic beauty while us kids in the grand tradition of the last century roamed unfettered by safety restraints between seats and cargotmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-2090991351720715072013-03-19T21:16:00.002-07:002013-03-19T21:16:09.007-07:00Eating Out
This evening I went out to dinner with friends. We went to a local place on Wilshire here in town and I decided that for once I was going to have a starter that we'd share: asparagus in a really nice mustard sauce. I ordered meatloaf with mashed potatoes and sautéed kale.

I am not one for the outdoors. By outdoors I don't mean sitting in the park on a warm spring day reading a book and sipping a frothy-frozen coffee beverage while in the back of my mind plotting my next meal. I mean the Great Outdoors. I do not camp. Well, not that way.
I was lucky enough to find this out early. I had (have) an older brother who loved all that stuff. I love winter in LA. It's certainly not terribly cold, although it can get down to near freezing at night and most older buildings aren't built with insulation, so heating can be expensive- I don't use mine.
What I really like is watching people at this time of the year. You'll see natives pulling out parka when it's a little over 60º while tourists from places like Wisconsin are in tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-54162546568269210392012-12-15T22:03:00.004-08:002012-12-15T22:03:38.277-08:00You Like Me! I just spent a couple of hours watching the fascinating and wholly excellent BBC Doc "Electric Dreams". It takes a typical Upper-Middle class English family of 2009 and plunks and re-does their home back to 1970. From there, they will "age" technologically one year for every day, until they hit the year 2000.
It's fascinating because the parents long for the days when families would be more tmp00http://www.blogger.com/profile/07394341047945443955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14441172.post-55622624056257450252012-11-21T00:00:00.000-08:002012-11-21T00:00:20.647-08:00Whither Twinkie?

The company said that they cannot afford to continue to bake it's low priced treats while paying the wages of it's employees. The unionized employees counter that the top-heavy management was sucking the life out of the company.
